(a) What is meant by the ‘loudness’ of sound? On what factor does the loudness of a sound depend?
(b) Draw labelled diagrams to represent (a) soft sound, and (b) loud sound, of the same frequency.
(a). Loudness is the attribute of sound that determines the intensity of the auditory sensation produced. When the intensity is very small, the sound is not audible; when it is too great, it becomes painful and dangerous to the ear.
The loudness of a sound wave depends on its amplitude. The higher the amplitude of a sound wave, the loudness of the sound will be high.
