(a)What happens when ethanol is oxidised with alkaline potassium permanganate (or acidified potassium dichromate)? Write the equation of the reaction involved.
(b) Choose those compounds from the following which can turn blue litmus solution red:
HCHO, CH3COOH, CH3OH, C2H5OH, HCOOH, CH3CHO
Give reasons for your choice.
(a) When ethanol is oxidized with alkaline potassium permanganate (or acidified potassium dichromate), it gets oxidized to form ethanoic acid.
The equation for the above reaction is given below:
$CH_3CH_2OH + 2 [O] \xrightarrow[or acidified K_2Cr_2O_7]{Alkaline KMnO_4 ; heat} CH_3COOH + H_2O$
(b) CH3COOH and HCOOH can turn blue litmus solution red as they are organic acids.
