(a) Activity to demonstrate the decomposition reaction of lead nitrate $Pb(NO_{3})_{2}$
Take about 2 g of lead nitrate powder in a boiling tube.
Hold the boiling tube with a pair of tongs and heat it over a flame as shown in the given figure.
(b) Given below is a labelled diagram of the experimental set-up.
The two main observations are:
- The emission of brown fumes of $NO_{2}$ after thermal decomposition of $Pb(NO_{3})_{2}$
- The colourless compound $Pb(NO_{3})_{2}$ forms a yellow compound $PbO$ and brown fumes of $NO_{2}$ gas.
(c) The balanced chemical equation for the reaction is given below:
$2Pb \underset{(s)}{(NO_{3})_{2}}\overset{\Delta }{\rightarrow}\underset{(s)}{2PbO}+\underset{(g)}{4NO_{2}}+\underset{(g)}{O_{2}}$
