(a) Define a combination reaction.(b) Give one example of a combination reaction which is also exothermic.(c) Give one example of a combination reaction which is also endothermic.

(a) Combination reaction: The reactions in which two or more substances combine to form a single substance is called a combination reaction.
It is represented as X+ Y  XY.
(b) The reactions in which heat is released is known as an exothermic reaction:
Example: Carbon combines with oxygen to give carbon dioxide, heat energy is released during the process.
$C\ ( s) \ +\ O_{2} \ ( g) \ \rightarrow \ CO_{2} \ +\ Heat$
(c)  The reactions in which heat is absorbed is known as an endothermic reaction:
Example: Nitrogen combines with oxygen to give nitric oxide, heat is required for this reaction to occur.
$N_{2} \ ( g) \ +\ O_{2} \ ( g) \ \xrightarrow{Heat} \ 2NO\ ( g)$
