An insect crawls up 5 cm every second on a 60 cm vertical rod and then falls down 2 cm over the next second. How many seconds will it take to climb the rod?

Given :

An insect crawls up 5 cm every second on a 60 cm vertical rod and then falls down 2 cm over the next second.

To find :

We have to find the time taken by the insect to climb the rod.

Solution :

This implies,

In two seconds of time the insect crawls up $(5-2) cm = 3 cm$.

This implies,

The distance travelled by the insect in 1 sec $= \frac{3}{2}$ cm.

The time taken by the insect to crawl up 60 cm vertical rod $= \frac{60}{\frac{3}{2}} sec = 60 \times \frac{2}{3} sec = 20 \times 2 sec = 40 sec$.

The time taken by the insect to crawl up 60 cm vertical rod is 40sec.
