An electric kettle rated as 1200 W at 220 V and a toaster rated at 1000 W at 220 V are both connected in parallel to a source of 220 V. If the fuse connected to the source blows when the current exceeds 9.0 A, can both appliances be used at the same time? Illustrate your answer with calculations.

Given,

Voltage of the power supply, V = 220 V
Power rating of the kettle, Pk = 1200 W
Power rating of the toaster, Pt = 1000 W
So, the total Power, P will be = (P+ Pt) = 1200 + 1000 = 2200 W
Fuse rating = 9A

We know that-
$P=V\times I$
Substituting the given values we get-
$2200=220\times I$
$I=\frac{2200}{220}$
$I=10A$

So, when both the appliances are switched on together, the maximum current drawn is 10A, which is greater than the rating of the fuse, due to which the fuse will get burnt. Therefore, both appliances cannot be used at the same time.
