Alum increases the rate of sedimentation. Why?
Alum increases the rate of sedimentation because alum being an external agent causes the particles present in solution to become more heavy due to alum's chemical reacts with them and made them more heavier than before.
As heavier particles sink in water these particles settle down therefore, increasing the speed of sedimentation.
