Let total number of pages in the book = a

Given that:

Pages read = $\frac{5}{8}$ of total pages

Pages read = $\frac{5a}{8}$

So,

Number of pages left = Total pages $-$ Pages 

Number of pages left = $a\ -\ \frac{5a}{8}$ 

Number of pages left = $\frac{8a\ -\ 5a}{8}$

Number of pages left = $\frac{3a}{8}$ 

Also,

Number of pages left = 168

$\frac{3a}{8}$ = 168

a = 168 $\times\ \frac{8}{3}$

a = 448

Total pages in the book = a = 448 pages

So, there are 448 pages in the book.
