A wooden beam is $ 8 \mathrm{~m} $ long and 2 m wide contains 1280 cubic metres of wood. What is the thickness of the beam?
Given:
Length of the beam $=8\ m$
Width of the beam$=2\ m$
The beam contains 1280 cubic metres of wood.
To do:
We have to find the thickness of the beam.
Solution:
Let the thickness of the beam be $x$.
Volume of the beam$=$The amount of wood the beam contains
This implies,
$8\times2\times x=1280$
$x=\frac{1280}{16}$
$x=80\ m$
The thickness of the beam is $80\ m$.
