A wire is bent in the shape of a rectangle of sides 20 cm and 16 cm. If it is bent in the shape of a square then what will be the length of the square?

Given:

A wire is bent in the shape of a rectangle of sides 20 cm and 16 cm.

It is later bent in the shape of a square.
To do:

We have to find the length of the square.

Solution:

We know that,

Perimeter of a rectangle of length $l$ and breadth $b$ is $2(l+b)$.
Perimeter of a square of side $s$ is $4s$.

Let the side of the square be $x$.
The perimeter formed by the wire when it is bent into the shape of a square is equal to the perimeter formed by the rectangle.

Therefore,

$2(16+20)=4x$

$36=2x$

$x=\frac{36}{2}$

$x=18$

The length of the side of the square is $18\ cm$.
