(a) State the advantages of constructing dams across the rivers(b) Describe some of the problems associated with the construction of dams.

(a) It is important to build large dams to ensure the storage of adequate water for use when required for several purposes such as irrigation, etc. Water from the dam can also be used to generate electricity.

(b) The three main problems that should be addressed while building large dams, to maintain peace among local people are:

1. Social problems (Building dams across the flowing river can sometimes cause flood in nearby towns and villages. In these cases, the government has to relocate the people to a safer place. Also, proper compensation is provided to people who lost their source of income due to dam construction.)

2. Economical problems (Construction of dams require a large investment of money that can be overcome from the profit generated in electricity production).

3. Environmental problems (Construction of dams can lead to deforestation thereby loss of biodiversity. This can be managed by growing more trees to avoid disturbances in the natural ecosystem).
