A side of square flower bed is 1m 80cm long. It is enlarged by digging a strip 20 cm wide all around it. Find the area of the enlarged flower bed and also the increase in area of flower bed . how to find the solution of this upper question?

Given:

A side of square flower bed is 1m 80cm long.

It is enlarged by digging a strip 20 cm wide all around it.

To Do:

Find the area of the enlarged flower bed and also the increase in area of flower bed .

Solution:

Side of square flower bed = $1 m 80 cm = 1.8 m$

Area of square flower bed = $side^{2}$

                                                = $(1.8 m)^{2}$

                                               = $3.24 m^{2}$

Width of strip = $20 cm = 0.2 m$

Side of enlarged square flower bed = $1.8 m + 2 \times 0.2 m = 2.2 m$

Area of enlarged square flower bed = $side^{2}$

                                                                 = $(2.2 m)^{2} $

                                                                 = $4.84 m^{2}$

So, increase in area of square flower bed = $4.84 - 3.24 = 1.6 m^{2}$
