A shop owner earns a profit of Rs 280 on the sale of a pair of footwear and incurs a loss of Rs 165 on the sale of a purse. In a particular week, he incurs a loss of Rs 300. If he sold 6 pairs of footwear in that week, then how many purses did the shop owner sell in that particular week?

Given :

A shop owner earns a profit of Rs 280 on the sale of a pair of footwear and incurs a loss of Rs 165 on the sale of a purse. In a particular week, he incurs a loss of Rs 300.

To find:  We have to find how many purses did the shop owner sell in that particular week.

Solution:

Profit on the sale of a pair of footwear = ₹ 280

Loss on the sale of a purse = ₹ 165

Pairs of footwear sold in that week = 6

Let the number of purses sold = a

Now, considering profit as positive integer and loss as negative integer also, given that in that week owner incurs a loss of ₹

300

Profit on one pair of  footwear x No. of  footwear + Loss  on  a  purse x No.  of  purse= Total loss suffered by the owner

=> 1680 - 165a = - 300

=> - 165a = - 300 - 1680

=> - 165a = - 1980

Dividing -1980 by -165 we get,

=> a = 12

So, the number of purse sold(a) = 12
