A neutral organic compound X of molecular formula C2H6O on oxidation with acidified potassium dichromate gives an acidic compound Y. Compound X reacts with Y on warming in the presence of conc. H2SO4 to give a sweet smelling substance Z. What are X, Y, and Z?

Compound X is ethanol (CH3CH2OH) as it has the molecular formula C2H6O.

Compound Y is ethanoic acid (CH3COOH) as it is formed on the oxidation of ethanol with acidified potassium dichromate.

Z is ethyl ethanoate (CH3COOC2H5is the ester that is formed when ethanol and ethanoic acid reacts in presence of conc. sulphuric acid.

Ethanol reacts with ethanoic acid to form ethyl ethanoate ester. The chemical equation is given below:
$CH_3COOH  + CH_3CH_2OH \xrightarrow {conc. H_2SO_4} CH_3COOC_2H_5  + H_2O$
