(a) The main organs of the human digestive system are:
- Mouth
- Oesophagus
- Stomach
- The small intestine
- Large intestine
- Anus
The associated glands are:
- Salivary glands
- Liver
- Pancreas
(b)
- Digestion of Carbohydrates: Carbohydrates are digested by salivary amylase, present in the saliva. As food enters the mouth cavity, it gets mixed with the saliva, which contains salivary amylase. It helps in the digestion of starch. Pancreatic amylase enzyme is secreted by the pancreas. It reaches the small intestine and digests the carbohydrates.
- Digestion of Fats: Fats are digested by the enzyme called lipase, secreted by the pancreas, and the bile juice that is secreted by the liver. These two breaks down the fats in the small intestine.
- Digestion of Proteins: Proteins are also digested by the enzyme known as pepsin. It is secreted in the stomach by the glands present in its walls of the stomach. The enzyme, Trypsin is secreted by the pancreas. It reaches the small intestine and digests the proteins.
