A man is 4 times as old as his son. After 16 years, he will be only twice as old as his son. Find their present ages.

Given :

A man is 4 times as old as his son.

After 16 years, he will be only twice as old as his son.

To do :

We have to find their present ages.

Solution :

Let the age of the son be x.

This implies, the age of the man $= 4x$.

After 16 years,

Age of son $= x+16$

Age of the man $= 4x+16$

Therefore,

$4x+16=2(x+16)$

$4x+16=2x+32$

$4x-2x=32-16$

$2x=16$

$x=\frac{16}{2}$

$x=8$

$4 x = 4(8)=32$

Their present ages are 8 years and 32 years.
