(a) Draw a labelled diagram of (i) a xylem vessel, and (ii) a sieve tube (or phloem).
(b) What are the differences between the transport of materials in xylem and phloem?

(a) (i) Labelled diagram of a xylem vessel.

(a) (ii) Labelled diagram of a sieve tube or phloem.

(b) The differences between the transport of materials in xylem and phloem are as follows:

Transport of materials in Xylem
Transport of materials in Phloem
1. Xylem tissues help in the transport of water and minerals from the roots are to other parts of the plant.
1. Phloem tissues help in the transport of food from the leaves to other parts of the plant.
2. Transports water only in one direction, i.e upwards.
2. Transport food in both directions, upwards and downwards.

3. Water is transported upward by transpirational pull due to evaporation of water from the leaves.

3. Material is transported due to the difference in osmotic pressure created using energy from ATP.
4. Transport of material takes place through vessels and tracheids which are dead tissue.
4. Transport of material takes place through sieve tubes and companion cells which are living cells.
