A cook purchases $5 \frac{1}{6}$ Kg potatoes, $3 \frac{5}{12}$ Kg tomatoes, and $1 \frac{5}{9}$ Kg carrots. What is the total quantity of the vegetables purchased?

Given: A cook purchases 5 $\frac{1}{6}$ Kg potatoes

3 $\frac{5}{12}$ Kg tomatoes, and

1 $\frac{5}{9}$ Kg carrots

To find:  Find what is the total quantity of the vegetables purchased.

Solution:

$5\frac{1}{6} + 3 \frac{5}{12} + 1 \frac{5}{9}$

Adding whole number parts = 5 + 3 + 1 = 9

Adding fraction parts = $\frac{1}{6} + \frac{5}{12} + \frac{5}{9} = \frac{6}{36} + \frac{15}{36} + \frac{20}{36}$

= $\frac{41}{36} = 1 \frac{5}{36}$

So we got 1 whole number and a fraction $\frac{5}{36}$

So the total quantity fo vegetables = 10 $\frac{5}{36}$ Kg
