A bag contains 5 black, 7 red and 3 white balls. A ball is drawn from the bag at random. Find the probability that the ball drawn is not black.

Given:

A bag contains 5 black, 7 red and 3 white balls. A ball is drawn from the bag at random.

To do:

We have to find the probability that the ball drawn is not black.

Solution:

Number of black balls $=5$

Number of red balls $=7$

Number of white balls $=3$

Total number of balls $=5+7+3=15$

This implies,

The total number of possible outcomes $n=15$.

Here, not a black ball implies a red or a white ball.

Total number of favourable outcomes(drawing a red or a white ball) $=7+3=10$.

We know that,

Probability of an event $=\frac{Number\ of\ favourable\ outcomes}{Total\ number\ of\ possible\ outcomes}$

Therefore,

Probability that the ball drawn is not black $=\frac{10}{15}$

$=\frac{2}{3}$

The probability that the ball drawn is not black is $\frac{2}{3}$.
