Michael D. Kors
Michael Kors, a Long Island native who travelled to New York City to study at the Fashion Institute of Technology, left the program after just two semesters. In 1981, Kors introduced his line of clothing for ladies, and in 2004, he was appointed a judge on Project Runway. Michelle Obama, the first lady, appeared for her first official photograph wearing a Michael Kors gown. Kors resides in New York. He sells ready-to-wear for both men and women, fragrances, footwear, jewelry, watches, and other accessories.
Personal Life and the Road to Becoming a Fashionista
Michael David Kors, a well-known fashion designer, was born Karl Anderson Jr. on Long Island, New York, on August 9, 1959, and grew up there. Kors began modelling when she was a young child, taking part in advertisements for Lucky Charms cereal and toilet paper on a nationwide scale. His original parents divorced while he was a small child, and at age 5, his mother married businessman Bill Kors, giving him a new name. He settled on David, his second preferred choice, as his middle name and Michael, his first name. He was permitted to create his mother's wedding gown as well. Already addicted to fashion, Kors was ecstatic about the possibility.
From their suburban Merrick, New York home, Kors scavenged every scrap of fashion knowledge he could find. In the 1970s, Kors relocated to New York City to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology. He stopped out after two semesters because he preferred the city to the school. When Kors started working at the French store Lothar's in 1978, he had the opportunity to create and market his first line of clothing. The well-received collection sparked enough interest for Kors to launch his own clothing company. Bergdorf Goodman and Saks Fifth Avenue carried the high-end department store Michael Kors Women's Collection, which debuted in May 1981.
In August 2011, only a few weeks after homosexual marriage was made legal in New York, Kors wed Lance La Pere, vice president of Michael Kors Women's Design. When La Pere was an intern at the business in 1990, the two had their first encounter.
What was Project Runway?
In 2004, Kors was asked to serve as a judge on the brand-new reality television program, Project Runway. He nearly declined it. "True-life drama? TV shows about fashion?" Kors recalled his thoughts. He said, "I believed that the only people who would watch it were fashion nuts, homosexual guys, and males who wanted to see Heidi Klum in a short dress." He was mistaken.
On December 1, 2004, the program made its debut, and both viewers and reviewers loved it right away. Fans loved Kors's one-liners and direct judgments, so he remained a judge in consecutive seasons. His consistent tan was a point of pride for the beach-loving Kors when viewers of Project Runway made comments about it. The fashion designer made a joke, saying, "Now that Valentino has retired, I think someone must hoist the too-tanned flag."
Kors made the announcement that he would be leaving Project Runway in 2012. The sitcom had received several Emmy Award nominations at that point, in addition to other accolades.
A Career in the Fashion Industry
The successful mix of Kors' understated, tastefully cut attire and his endearingly convincing sales tactics was evident. For "trunk shows," or little fashion presentations held in people's homes, Kors toured the country. At the age of 23, he persuaded Anna Wintour, then the editor of New York magazine and currently the editor of Vogue, to visit his collection.
The opulent Madison Avenue showrooms Kors would later have been still a long way off; the collection was displayed spread out on his bed at his apartment. From these modest beginnings, he quickly gained the admiration of famous people like Barbara Walters and won prizes for his creations.
However, the Kors firm was compelled to reorganize in 1990 and file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. After getting back on his feet again, Michael Kors established KORS Michael Kors, a more affordable label. In 1997, he was named the creative director of the French fashion label Celine. He proceeded to build his own brand throughout the six years he held that job, creating menswear, accessories, and perfume lines. He received the most coveted honor in American fashion, the Menswear Designer of the Year award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 2003.

Today, Michael Kors is a well-known and celebrated ready-to-wear and luxury accessory designer. His 1981-founded eponymous business today manufactures a variety of goods under the Michael Kors Collection brand.
