Description

When your computer operated by Server systems, such as Server 2012 (r2), has low disk space problem, you can extend partition to get rid of it.

Extend Volume Windows Server 2012 with Disk Management
Click Start and type in “Server Manager” in search column to find Server Manager and open it. Then, click “Disk Management” on the left panel to open Disk Management.

Step1.Take system volume for example. Right click Volume C and choose “Extend Volume” to extend volume Windows Server 2012.

Note: Only when there is free space right behind system volume, can it be extended. Otherwise, the “Extend Volume” will greyed out of usage. However, even if you shrink the existing volume (such as D Volume) which is very behind Volume C, the unallocated space (free space) you get is located behind the rest D Volume, and it is not very behind C:\. Therefore, you still cannot extend system volume with the unallocated space. And, Disk Management can’t change the location of the unallocated space and make it to the site very behind system volume. Yet, the only way is to transfer the data on D:\ to other volume and delete D Volume to make it becomes unallocated. Then, you can extend system volume.

Step2.The next window is Extend Volume Wizard. Click “Next” to continue.

Extend Partition Windows Server 2012 with AOMEI Partition Assistant Server
As a third-party Server partition manager, AOMEI Partition Assistant Server contains all together up to 30 features for users to get full control of their server disk partitions. With it, they can easily extend/shrink system or data partition, merge multiple partitions/unallocated spaces into one or split one large partition into two smaller, directly allocated free space from one partition to another, etc. Here, for extending system partition, it needs just a few steps.

Before you do

Purchase and install AOMEI Partition Assistant Server on your computer. You’d better NOT install it on the partition you are going to extend. If you do, it will restart the computer and carry out operations under PreOs mode.

Step1. Right click system partition and choose “Resize Partition” to extend windows server 2012 partition.

Step2. Drag the right end of the graphic bar rightwards to extend volume Windows Server 2012. How far you drag depends how much to extend C partition. Or, you can directly put the size you want system partition to be in Partition size column. However, its size cannot be larger than the total size of original C Partition and free space.

Step3. Preview the size after Windows Server 2012 extend partition and really start the operations by clicking “Apply” on the upper left.

Comparison

Both Disk Management and AOMEI Partition Assistant Server can extend volume Windows Server 2012, but the former has a limitation. Just as said above, Disk Management can extend a volume only when there is a free space very behind the volume. Otherwise, it’s impossible. However, for the latter, there is no such limitation. Even if the unallocated space is not right behind the partition you are going to enlarge, you can move the unallocated space to make it is.
