New Google Backup and Sync App Can Automatically Backup to Google Drive
Recently, on June 28, 2017, Google released a folder backup and sync tool between local computer and online Google Drive cloud storage named Backup and Sync. Actually, this software is used to replace the former Desktop Photo Backup and Google Drive app to automatically backup photos/files to Google Drive online.

The first step is Google auto backup login.

Once signed in, let us go to Google auto backup settings. The step two is computer settings. You can specify Google backup folder on your machine to be backed up to Google Drive. If there are photos or videos in source folder, you can set their upload size to manage your cloud drive space. You can also check “Upload photos and videos to Google Photos”.

Then, it goes to step three - Google Drive settings. Here, you can select which folder(s) to be synced back to local computer and to which local folder to save the synced files/photos.

Lastly, just click “START” and it will auto backup to Google drive folder.

Seems easily and perfect. However, it is actually not so. There are some issues, problems, limitations or bugs.

Backup and Sync can’t skip/filter certain file. These files are what you do not want to backup (unnecessary) or already backed up, such as raw files and jpeg pictures. Backup and Sync have to back up the whole folder; this will waste Google auto backup space in destination and take away Google auto backup time. This is stupid.

Backup and Sync can’t backup photos/files that reside on a network share (NAS).

Backup and Sync will re-backup photos, pictures or videos which have been copied to Google Drive before by Desktop Photo Backup. This will not only require more target storage space but also cost more time to finish the task. That is why some users complain about Google photos backup slow or Google drive sync never stops.

Since Google Photos has been merged with Google Drive, rumor has it Google is letting people get away with having a 1 user business account to access unlimited storage.


Therefore, what can we do? On the one hand, we can continue to bear this troublesome work of auto backup photos to Google drive with Backup and Sync or just roll back to the older Desktop Photos Backup. Yet, it seems hard to go back for we can’t find where to download the former automatic backup software. (I have tried but failed)

On the other hand, we can turn to ask help for third party tools. Actually, I select out one which is powerful and free. Let us see how it works?
