If the length and breadth of a rectangle are $ 10 \mathrm{~cm} $ and $ 20 \mathrm{~cm} $, respectively, find the length of its diagonal.

AcademicMathematicsNCERTClass 8

Given:

The length and breadth of a rectangle are \( 10 \mathrm{~cm} \) and \( 20 \mathrm{~cm} \).

To do:

We have to find the length of its diagonal.

Solution:

We know that,

Length of the diagonal of a rectangle of length $l$ and breadth $b$ is $\sqrt{l^2+b^2}$

The length of the rectangle $=10\ cm$

The breadth of the rectangle $=20\ cm$

Therefore,

The length of the diagonal $=\sqrt{(10)^2+(20)^2}$

$=\sqrt{100+400}$

$=\sqrt{500}$

$=\sqrt{5\times100}$

$=2.236\times10$

$=22.36\ cm$

The length of the diagonal of the given rectangle is $22.36\ cm$.
