How is sound produced and how is it transmitted and heard by us?

A sound is a form of energy produced by vibrating bodies. Sound is produced when something vibrates. The vibrating body causes the medium (water, air, etc.) around it to vibrate. Vibrations in the air are called traveling longitudinal waves, which we can hear. At $20^{\circ}\ C$, the speed of sound in air is about 343 m/s.

Now, it enters our ear and travels down a canal at the end of which a thin membrane is tightly stretched known as the eardrum. The eardrum sends vibrations to the inner part of the ear and eventually reaches the brain and we hear sounds.
