Supriya, while doing an experiment in the science laboratory, kept a laboratory thermometer 'P' 10cm away on side of the flame of the candle. Her friend Riya kept a similar thermometer 'Q' 10cm above the flame of the candle. In which of the thermometers, 'P' or 'Q' the rise in temperature will be faster? Give reason for answer.?

Thermometer Q will show a faster rise in temperature. Due to the flame of the candle the air gets heated. The hot air becomes lighter and due to convection, it rises up. So more heat is transferred above the flame of the candle.

Since Q is kept above the flame, it gets heated easily due to convection. Since P is kept beside the flame convection is less and it is heated slowly.
