Describe an experiment to show the chemical effect of electric current.
A chemical reaction takes place when an electric current passes through a conducting solution. As a result, bubbles of a gas may be formed on the electrodes.
This can be observed in the following experiment
- Take two iron nails and clean them with sandpaper.
- Wrap copper wire around both the nails and connect the other ends to the battery.
- Take water in a beaker and add a little amount of salt or acid to it.
- Immerse the nails in the solution.
- Observe the nails carefully. You can see bubbles of gases coming out from water near nails.
When an electric current is passed through water hydrogen and oxygen gases are evolved. Electricity breaks down water and converts into hydrogen and oxygen gases.
