Attention: Definition and Meaning
The environment around us is changing continuously, and the brain adapts to these new changes with the help of attention. People always use some form of attention by concentrating on a particular thing, and attention is unique and different for different people.
What is Attention?
Attention is the term used for the cognitive processes that select certain inputs for inclusion in our conscious experience at any time period. This process involves the act of concentrating on a topic, listening or object for the attainment of the desired end. Attention is a process and not a product. The concentration given by the process of attention helps us in the accuracy of the perception of the perceived object or phenomenon. Thus, attention is not a cognitive factor but is essentially determined by emotions, attitude, interest, and memory.

Types of Attention
There are many distinct types of attention that person may use. Some of these include
Sustained attention − This type of attention is also known as concentration, and it is the potential to target one thing for a continuous period. During this time, people concentrate on the task at hand and constantly engage in behavior until the task is done or a certain period has passed.
Alternating attention − includes multitasking or effortlessly shifting attention between two or more things with different cognitive demands. It is not only regarding the target on more than one thing at the same time, but it is regarding the stopping of concentration on one thing and then shifting to the next task.
Selective attention − This type of attention involves being able to select to attend to a particular stimulus in the environment while at the same time turning out other things. Selective attention needs individuals to tune out irrelevant external stimuli and internal distractions to stay selectively attentive to a task.
Focused attention − Focused attention involves being capable of being suddenly drawn to particular visual, tactile, or auditory stimuli. It responds quickly to external stimuli, which can be vital when something in the environment needs immediate attention and fast action.
Limited attention − This type of attention is a type of attention that involves multitasking. In this case, attention is divided into multiple tasks. Rather than shifting focus, people attend to these stimuli simultaneously and may answer simultaneously to multiple demands.
