Description:

When browsing in a public location (i.e work / coffee shop / friends house) your connection to the internet can easily be sniffed and people can see what websites you are going on and even capture any passwords you send to webpages. Also users could sniff any type of traffic eminating from your machine, such as Instant messenger data, VOIP, Gaming or any other type of data that is useful to anyone

If you have a home machine with Ubuntu (or pretty much any linux distro) you can download and install an SSH server which allows you to effectively "dial in" with a secure tunnel from another machine.    More detail...
