Example 1

The following example shows the usage of Long shortValue() method to get short value from an Long object. We've created a Long variable and assign it a Long object containing a positive integer number. Then using shortValue method, we're obtaining the short value from this object and then printed it.

package com.tutorialspoint;
public class LongDemo {
   public static void main(String[] args) {
      Long obj = new Long(5L);

      // returns the value of this Long as a short
      short s = obj.shortValue();
      System.out.println("Value of s = " + s);
   }
}

Output

Let us compile and run the above program, this will produce the following result −

Value of s = 5

Example 2

The following example shows the usage of Long shortValue() method to get short value from an Long object. We've created a Long variable and assign it a Long object containing a negative integer number. Then using shortValue method, we're obtaining the short value from this object and then printed it.

package com.tutorialspoint;
public class LongDemo {
   public static void main(String[] args) {
      Long obj = new Long(-5L);

      // returns the value of this Long as a short
      short s = obj.shortValue();
      System.out.println("Value of s = " + s);
   }
}

Output

Let us compile and run the above program, this will produce the following result −

Value of s = -5

Example 3

The following example shows the usage of Long shortValue() method to get short value from an Long object. We've created a Long variable and assign it a Long object containing a zero value. Then using shortValue method, we're obtaining the short value from this object and then printed it.

package com.tutorialspoint;
public class LongDemo {
   public static void main(String[] args) {
      Long obj = new Long(0L);

      // returns the value of this Long as a short
      short s = obj.shortValue();
      System.out.println("Value of s = " + s);
   }
}

Output

Let us compile and run the above program, this will produce the following result −

Value of s = 0

Example 4

The following example shows the usage of Long shortValue() method to get short value from an Long object. We've created a Long variable and assign it a Long object containing a negative zero value. Then using shortValue method, we're obtaining the short value from this object and then printed it.

package com.tutorialspoint;
public class LongDemo {
   public static void main(String[] args) {
      Long obj = new Long(-0L);

      // returns the value of this Long as a short
      short s = obj.shortValue();
      System.out.println("Value of s = " + s);
   }
}

Output

Let us compile and run the above program, this will produce the following result −

Value of s = 0
